NATURE
A warm summer night-- two ravens tear off the flesh of a soft, ripe peach. •• Yellow hibiscus gather rain in its small cup on a June evening. •• Slowly closing up, the African Moon senses the shifting weather. •• In the plainest fields, an array of grassflowers blossom in silence. •• "HEN AND CHICKS" Gathering water in its cupped leaves like a child collecting rain drops •• Roadside wildflower, blooming where you don't expect– the black-eyed susan. •• Late in November, in Kogen Onsen, the trees burn in bright colors. •• The old fire tree sheds its last leaves, realizing that the rain won't come. •• The caterpillars feed on large cauliflowers while the farmer sleeps. •• Fresh from its long dream, a young caterpillar feels the earth hum with life. •• A plump worm nuzzles in a big, brown potato, dreaming of harvest. •• The dragonfly rests on a shy water lily floating on the pond. •• The long-tailed shrikes rest on the branches of guava trees laden with ripe fruit. •• A swift skylark gives a furry caterpillar its first taste of flight. •• A young green frog peeks out of the water, thinking how strange we all seem. •• Alert to the world, perched on a low-hanging branch-- a young brown sparrow. •• Riding the strong wind, not minding the tide below; cormorants in flight. •• A fishing pirogue filled with fresh-caught Capitaine approaches the shore. •• Whiskered terns perch on an old pontoon boat anchored in the marina. •• Out in the wetlands, on a neat platform of grass the Grey Crowned Crane broods. •• Up the craggy cliff, a hawk quietly watches the cormorants dive. •• The calm river's bed is armored with rocks; stronger than you think. |
LIFE
Change is like an Aunt who visits without calling and you can't throw out. •• Cradling her cup on a warm June morning, trying to read the tea leaves. •• How strange that we should find ourselves restless, even with all this movement. •• Even the earth knows the only way is forward and we age with it. •• Beneath a candle a moth nurses a burnt wing, regretting nothing. PEOPLE The woman wears her happiness well, bright yellow like calla lilies. •• She came home one day; a furry desert flower in her dress pocket. •• She finally learned that mayflies seize each moment because they have to. •• The young girl watches a Bohemian Waxwing feast on wild berries. CITY A crow perches on the roof of an old phone booth-- sleek city dweller. •• Soon, the truck arrives, whining like a school boy on a Monday morning. •• A white dove circles the top of an old building, casting small shadows. |
